I would guess there is a diabolical plot. Someone wants to reveal it to Doc, but gets killed on the way to his office, but Doc discovers clues from the guy's body and/or by seeing the assassin. (That's the set up for about half of 'em)
I swear, he would have saved so many lives if he had his headquarters at the 2nd floor of the Empire State Building, not the top
