I turned on my wifi for the first time in weeks (maybe months) today and the system downloaded the new version. I decided to risk it and let the system upgrade itself. Took about 8-10 minutes. Everything went well. All my settings seem to have been kept and, so far, the reading experience is good.
As a data point, I did have the plugin installed.
I've not tried the shelves feature yet.
