Is it true that if I want to upgrade my firmware I am forced to time travel back to 1984 and register online?
It may depend on the firmware version. 1.9.14 has a 'skip setup' button which allows you to use the reader without an account, though only with sideloaded epubs (I assume). I don't remember if this was the case for the other firmwares up to 2 (which I think won't work without an account). In my case, I don't mind having an account but as I run 64bit linux and using the desktop client is a bit of a pain, I often don't bother if I end up resetting for any reason.
