While it's true they could have used "regular" Adobe ID based DRM, Sony did make the choice to not enable support for Adobe Password based DRM on their newer readers as the RMSDK supports both.
I'm sure B&N did so for various reasons including not wanting to pay Adobe's DRM fees when they already owned eReader DRM, which is why they negotiated a deal with Adobe to use their DRM, but have the decryption setup like it is for eReader DRM'd books.
