Actually, according to this FAQ from Adobe, B&N DRM is a type of Adobe DRM, and B&N and Adobe's long-term plan is for all ADE devices to read both B&N-flavored Adobe DRM and the traditional Adobe DRM that we're all familiar with.

Adobe is clearly behind schedule, but ADE 1.8 (currently in preview/beta) can read B&N ebooks, but per this post, it looks like no one's been able to successfully sideload B&N ebooks to Sony readers using ADE 1.8. A handful of other devices (e.g., Ectaco jetBook Lite) as well as Bluefire Reader app for iPhone etc. can already read B&N ebooks.

It seems to me that B&N wants all ADE devices to be able to read their books, and it's Sony, not B&N, that's preventing us from reading B&N ebooks on our Sony readers. I can understand why Sony would do that, but it frustrates me.
