Okay, I think I have this one figured out. There does appear to be some issues with Kobo Desktop v3 and Kobo Touch v1.9.17. This means that their halting of the KT v2.0.0 rollout isn't really going to help people who had their KT bricked. Yes the KT will become usable (sort-of) again but you still can't properly use it. So, here is how I think I have solved it:

I still have a copy of the installation file for the older desktop version in my Downloads folder (KD v2.1.7). Actually, I downloaded it after the release of KDv3. I don't know why they didn't change it to KDv3 right away or if it is still on their site. Here is what I did:

1. I un-installed KDv3 from my computer,
2. Installed the older KD (v2.1.7) but didn't open the program,
3. Factory reset my KT again,
4. plugged my KT into my computer,
5. Opened the just installed, KD v2.1.7.

At this point the KT was immediately recognised and the setup started BEFORE KD could sync with Kobo's site. Once the setup was complete ie Step 4 of 4, KD told me that a new version of the Desktop was available and only gave me the option to Install.

6. So, I clicked Install,
7. As the new KD is being downloaded, I hit Cancel which shuts KD down.
8. I then unmounted/ejected my KT.

At this point, my KT had my settings properly entered but my library had not been downloaded.

9. I then did a sync via wifi.

Now, it seems all the books in my library no longer have the .html listed in the TOC and the chapters flow as expected from one to the next. So now, I just hope Kobo fix that KT firmware before I finish all of my available reading material again. The race is on!
