I just finished 'On Basilsk Station' and really had to force myself to do so. I admit to skipping over page after page of scientific development of the Warshawski Drive. (Personally, I prefer V.I. Warshawski!) I would love to hear that book 1 was the least readable of the series. That might (and only 'might') entice me to read another.

As for empathy for the characters, I couldn't even work up feelings for the treecat!
