I can easily imagine a home screen that will do those two things. It's simple, really. That's what options are for. Let the user decide what shows up on her home screen. As for selling content, the way to sell content is to present advertising when and if the user wants to see it. When presented with pushy ads, I just plain don't buy. Period.
I don't for a moment think that I am the only one who reacts this way.
