It sounds like you were using your K to store all your books instead of keeping copies on your computer's HDD. I hope this wasn't the case . . . if so, this advice may be too late for you, this time, but I
strongly recommend using Calibre or even just your computer's file management system to maintain your e-book library. Just because you can put thousands of books on an e-reader doesn't mean you don't need to back them up somewhere else.
And I wouldn't rely on Amazon to do this for you. Personally, I don't want Amazon tracking everything I read (including public domain books, personal files, library books) so I delete everything from their cloud storage except books and magazines purchased through them.
Good luck -- given the age of your device, it's highly likely that Amazon's great customer service will either fix or replace it.
