Perhaps is this "reduce available on-device storage" drive by the manufacturers an attempt to reduce piracy? Less space to store the illegal downloads? It would be a much greater risk to store them in the cloud. A payment from content providers for every GB below 32 on every device? Just kidding, but it would actually make sense, if not for ebooks then for movies and music.
