If actors had to only play roles appropriate to their size, Tom Cruise would be stuck playing Pinocchio. It is possibly a poor choice to have him play a character who is known to be physically imposing, but for movie goers who have not read the Reacher novels (that would be most of them) it will not make much difference. They will enjoy the movie - or not - based on its merits.
