I like most of Baxter's stuff that I have read. He is just so different from Pratchett that I couldn't imagine those two collaborating on anything.

I'm not aware of having read any Stephen Baxter before - having just looked he has quite a large canon of work. It seems he is known as a hard sci-fi author, and has collaborated with Arthur C. Clarke, which make more sense.
That said, I'm about 15% into the book right now, and am starting to get caught up in the story, so I'll give it a thumbs-up so far.
