You are absolutely correct on the Touch, except you tap the top of the screen to display the menu and page numbers. Tapping the center of the screen will page forward but not show page numbers.

OP bought the Kindle to read so he should READ the manual. I know we hate doing that, even myself and I spent 25 years writing technical manuals! But reading the Kindle manual will certainly help us learn more about the Kindle's functionality.
