OTOH, the advantages for Rakuten/Kobo are that they can free up resources currently employed on reader development. For ACCESS, development of a EPUB3 reader would be an logical development of their browser technology into e-Ink/Linux platforms.

Although EPUB3 and Japanese language support will mean an increase in the complexity of the code to be maintained, supporting latin character set would simply be a subset of EPUB3 functionality. Furthermore, it would theoretically open up the platform to the Chinese market as well.
