I would have to say that he was probably not the first to pass of his work as something it wasn't. On a side note, you probably watch movies that are "Based on a True Story", that have no close association with what actually happened, but those are still enjoyed and watched by many. I do not see the difference here. He took liberties with his recollection of events, and it was blown out of proportion by Oprah and the media circus. If the book means something and is good in itself, then the author is supposed to disappear, even if he is writing in the first person. It was not a complete lie though. So i would say it is "Based on a True Story".
