In your case madgrace, I would advise going back to Dingo - use the dingo golden - and then updating to the standard Ermine. Where you go from that is up to you but it does sound as if you have some form of conflict with some apps.
This will clear all the apps and data on your EE so make a backup of anything you need first.
All basic updates follow the same procedure using a USB stick.
