No, I stick by my analogy. A card reader is like the heater, not like a "detachable car trunk" (I don't know what that is though). Having a heater is not optional, it is not a nice feature, it is mandatory. No sale if it is missing.
As for the business model: You imply in your statement above that the manufacturers of the device are in it for the profit but what actually seems to be happening is that selling the device is not where they are trying to get their profit, they are trying for profit
after the sale. This is the problem. They seem to be intentionally handicapping the device so you will have to use overpriced services to make up for it (cloud, data plans, etc).
Please don't fall for this! If they don't get away with it they will stop trying and will offer much better products eventually.
