I managed to "fix" my Kindle. After reading everything I could on the USB and deciding that was more time, energy & $$ then I wanted to invest - I bought a Kindle 3 off of eBay for very low $$ that had one of those broken screens with the funny lines all over it. The outside of the screen looked whole but underneath it - when I opened it up - it was shattered. I then swapped my good screen with the internal components of the broken Kindle 3 and then had a working Kindle again!
