To test, I just opened Wizard of the Crow (957 pages) off an SD card with a Kobo Touch - it was 2 seconds before I could start reading. Maybe 2.5 seconds for Infinite Jest (1505 pages), and 2 for REAMDE (922 pages). Note: all are sideloaded epubs.

And this is with about 300 books on the card. I can't imagine a book taking minutes. I suspect there's something very wrong, either with the device or your files, if your KT is doing this.
