I was having trouble authenticating using the old ADE after trying (and not being able to use) the Preview. The problem with Preview I had is occurring with some regularity. I had uninstalled Preview some time ago.
In any case the solution for my Windows 7 64 bit machine was to go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Adobe_Systems_ Incorporate and delete the Preview file.
This file was not uninstalled when I uninstalled the program itself.
I don't know if you acutually have to do a reinstall of (old) ADE, but I had deleted plain old ADE as part of my Ms Fixit activities, so I did one.
