Any reader could die after the above accident, and it has nothing to do with "build quality" , that's just how nearly all readers are made.
Many owners have done the same or worse, and they've survived, the same as can happen if you drop an antique Ming vase ! Luck of the draw I'm afraid.
I presume you did check your household contents insurance for Accidental Damage cover ?
Should be covered........
And ithiswouldn't be covered by any warranty, only by some form of accidental damage insurance.
