Until recently most people didn't know about it. And most Urologist still do not recommend it because they are surgeons first.
The actual theory was suggested in 1946. The first use was in 1954 at the Berkley Radiation Laboratory. In 1961 The Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory and Massachusetts General Hospital started collaborated to use Proton Therapy. For a long time there were only two in the US. Loma Linda California and Boston Massachusetts. Now there are 10 in the US and they are building quite a few more.
