Fan fiction was all that I read for years since I could copy it into Word docs & put it in a size that I was comfortable reading.
And I can't tell you how many times I've read a fanfic and then went and bought the ebooks of the original author. Laurell K Hamilton comes to mind for me.
And while yes some of the stories are bad, and a great many writers start stories and never finish them, others have gone on to branch out with their own characters & become published writers themselves.
That's a win for everyone!
