Similar in function I guess is the pendulum (mechanical) automatic watches like Seiko has. They store enough energy for days of no movement.

The main consideration would probably be that a watch or a simple calculator use very little power. My watches will run for 3 to 5 years (or more) off a tiny button battery. A Kindle will run for a 3 to 5 weeks off a much larger battery.
Without doing any calculations...I strongly suspect that a Kindle would need a much larger panel, sunlight (rather than indoor lighting) and a good deal longer charge time. You'll probably never save enough to get the cost back vs. plugging it into an outlet. And we haven't considered the energy and waste produced in the manufacture of the solar cells.
