I'd care because it would mean, for example, that I couldn't take the SD card out of my camera and use it to view photographs on my tablet. Portability between device is one of the key purposes of an SD card.

No, clearly it's better to have an SD card slot - a standard SD card slot. That's why I chose to buy a tablet that had one.
