well i ll just give you one example that was pointed out the other day in a thread on Engadget i think. a lady does a large amount of embroidery. her particular machine has an sd slot. she can download embroidery patterns to a card and then stick the card in the machine and voila she can sew that pattern. her old pc has died so she is looking for an alternative.
so if she got a tablet that had a slot for sd cards but then didnt use the FAT file system that would be worthless to her because the sewing machine wouldnt recognize the card.
wanna take your card from your camera, put it in the tablet to upload the pcs? sorry you cant the tablet doesnt recognize the file system the camera used.
its why there is a standard. until someone pushes a new standard for new cards that uses an alternative then there will be FAT and there will be a fee to the patent holder.
actually come to think about it thats probably why the slightly higher priced tablets with card slots have rear facing cameras. the cameras themselves are actually only like $5-$8 in production quantities. but having them helps keep up the perceived value so they can keep some margin in the device while still paying the fee
