Like so many surveys, the devil's in the details. The article doesn't mention the timing of the survey. Up until a year ago the most popular e-reader, Kindle, and the most popular book store, Amazon, weren't linked to libraries, so the vast majority of users had no simple path to get digital books. Kindle library lending has only been open for 13 months and most libraries took a while to get on board.
Prior to Overdrive, getting e-books from our local library was a real chore, even for those few techies who read. Download the book, convert it to the right format, plug in e-reader, upload book. The first time I tried Overdrive, I was amazed at the simplicity. It's just as simple to borrow a library e-book as it is to buy it off Amazon.
