Calibre won't automatically download updates, but it will alert you when there is one. Calibre checks for updates every time it starts, and gives you a messages asking if you want to download or wait. If you say yes, it takes you to a download page that you then download the update from. After download, shut down Calibre, run the update exe, and the new version is installed.
That's how it works in Windows anyway.
