Well I've now updated to 4.1.0:

The Good
Font rendering seems clearer at smaller sizes - the serif shapes seem better defined. I normally read at size 3 and cannot perceive much difference at that size and larger, but subjectively the two smaller sizes (even the smallest) are easier to read.

The Bad
Moving the Turn Wireless on/off feature over to the Settings page really is quite annoying. Most of the things which need Wi-Fi can be initiated from the menu (Kindle Store, Check & Sync) and trigger a prompt to switch on Wi-Fi, which is reasonable; but hunting in the Settings page to switch it off again is a nuisance.
Actually what really grates is that the sense has been negated: now instead of turning wireless off, we're turning Airplane Mode on.

I suppose it's more consistent with the Fire and other Android devices, and I'll get used to it in time, but I can see a lot of people my parents' age running their battery down fast because they can't see how to disable the radio.
