A Windows Smartphone is certainly a better choice as a bookreader. You can install apps on that to read pretty much ANY format - LIT, Mobi, eReader, PDF, etc.

I don't know if it's any different in the US, but here in the UK the iPhone is only available on monthly contract at silly prices.
