It isn't a question of 'grasping' something.
The UK is part of the European Union, clearly.
It isn't part of continental Europe, equally clearly.
It, I would say, is not part of Europe 'culturally', for the majority of people. The UK still has very much an island mentality.
The word 'Europe' does not have a single unambiguous meaning, so people are free to apply their own.
