I don't mind samples, but I dislike it being presented as special gift to me.

That's plaid-clad-used-car-salesman smarmy.

It should be presented as "If you enjoyed this book, please consider taking at look at this sample of a new book inspired by it, thank you so much...."

Time Machine is a great book, I agree. One of the few "olden-times" SF classics I actually enjoyed reading when I was younger.
