It's been a while since I last used this method. After seeing "Recovery Mode", I can put the image on the usb mass storage. After that, I press 1. Is that ok?

If the second is the situation, then that narrows the problem down to finding which file update the installation process bailed out on (which should be in the logs - if those can be accessed).
The last time I did this, I got "Installation failed".
