This is due to way the LCD display mechanism sets up pixels. I have an Optiquest 19" wide screen with native resolution of 1680x1050. This is a bit of an oddball resolution. It will display 1600x1200 but I easily and quickly notice the discrepancies, especially in horizontal lines.

It is my understanding that this is entirely due to the monitor, not the graphics card.
Agreed, and I'll do just that, should I ever find a monitor like what I specified.

My current monitor (an Envision "flat screen" LCD CRT) will do 1600x1280 when I apply the INF file from Microsoft for it, but I see curious behavior when I try to push it that little extra bit. I also run in 16bit mode rather than 32 bit mode most times, as rendering in some apps slows way down in 32 bit mode.
