Another vote for Malazan Book of the Fallen. Best series for a long, long time; possibly ever. I can see the point about it being "too epic" for some, but it's one that everyone who likes gritty fantasy should at least try.

I've never read any Eastern European fantasy I think. Can't say that I know of any such either, although I know it exists.
