It is worth a shot to try on another computer, but it is also worth a shot to buy the same book from another vendor. Sometimes publishers screw up files; sometimes Kobo does. Rare, but true.
Kepub files only work on Kobo devices/apps. If the book has any flavour of Adobe DRM, you have to open it with ADE, unfortunately. I have uninstalled ADE using a 3rd party uninstaller in the past. It might be worth a shot doing that as standard installers can leave bits and pieces behind.
I have had weird things happen with ADE. "Broken" downloads that resulted in messages within ADE about resuming downloads that had successfully happened long ago, for example.
