Not at all.

Library readership stats help them make the case for increased funding (or, more likely, during the great recession, against funding cuts). Also, when you have the book checked out, someone else is delayed in reading it, and, if impatient, may purchase it.

If everyone merely imagined they were using the library, and instead pirated, a significant portion of creators' current incomes would also become imaginary.
