I just finished reading Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. I thought I had read this story years ago, as I was familiar with its basic outline, but I don't recall the depth of the two central characters in her story. I must have heard an radio adaptation, or read the Classics Illustrated version, but had I read this, I would not have forgotten it. This is a marvelous exploration of human psychology.
Frankenstein did create a monster, but not in his laboratory. He created a monster when he turned his back upon his creation. The creature was the ultimate abandoned child, judged by all humanity solely upon his ghastly appearance. He could have been a poet and a benefactor to humanity, but the abuse he suffered at the hands of all he encountered sealed his fate.
