Exactly. What I meant when I said "paying ... doesn't frighten me ... unless a digital copy approaches the scanning cost, in which case I prefer to pay someone to have some real work done." is that I have seen too many legal digital ebooks that are HORRIDLY OCRed scans of paper books. I can get more or less equally bad books for free, and I can have books scanned for pretty much the same price, which in turn assures me a much better quality, or at least control over the final product I get. It's not just money, it's how much does it cost vs what do I get -- the only way to compete with free is working hard to provide a good product that isn't overpriced.
Unfortunately I see more sellers trying to rip off their potential buyers instead : (
