It is for low level experimenting. The input is assumed to be numbers and an entry in the exth data is created of the type and with the data interpreted as a number as value. It was introduced to be able to test what happens if you change or add some fields. In mobi2mobi there is also a flag --delexthtype which can be used to remove an entry in the exth data.
