I'm brand new to this whole thing, having just got my new reader (a Sony). I really wish whoever wrote the instructions for these things would stop assuming that I already know everything

You know, I used to be pretty good at tech. gadgets, but that was when there were manuals you could read, that gave actual instructions, rather than just telling that things can be done. I miss manuals. I guess I'm showing my age, aren't I?
