It seems to be related to #2 on my original response.

This isn't *quite* as clear-cut. It could be argued that you're just
getting a format-shift of a book which you already own. I'd still
consider it piracy unless

1. It was an ebook created from a scan of a physical book
(allowing someone else to do the format-shift, which you
could do yourself)

or

2. The publisher has a policy allowing free access to ebook versions
of paper book copies which a person owns (I think one or two
publishers of some technical books allow this)
