You're not logging in. It sounds to me like the device still isn't registered. You have to do that first. Create an account at the Sony store. From there you register the device.

Logging in is what you do AFTER you've registered the device. You're logging into your Sony Reader Store account.

Does that make sense? I hope so because I really don't think you need to return the thing. There's nothing wrong with it.

Just out of curiousity have you been able to buy a book or even download a free book from the Sony store at all? If not, what happens when you try? I'm betting it's what I said above - you have to create an account at the Sony Reader Store, then register the device.
