Unfortunately you have to do it every time. That's exactly right: as long as the Finder no longer shows the little disk drive icon, it's safe to unplug the USB.

If the Finder ever refuses to eject any USB drive icon and force-quitting the Finder leads to an error which refuses to relaunch the Finder, take that as a sign to backup all your data immediately if you can (boot from external drive if you need to) and run Disk Utility on your boot partition at once.
