SETTINGS just contains the setup software for the Sony Reader app. It's annoying and I wish they wouldn't include it, because it's probably very out of date and you can just download it anyway.
Be sure to eject it via the Finder before disconnecting the reader, otherwise Mac OS X will complain (and there's a small chance of disk corruption of some sort; I remember occasionally when I locked up my Mac while it was still attached to the Kindle and rebooted, I ended up with a corrupted filesystem on my boot partition and had to wipe and reinstall everything).

May have something to do with whether or not your device is properly registered to the ADE account associated with your Sony account. IIRC, it would keep making me re-enter account/password until the ADE activation went through.
