We are measuring time in years
and days
and hours
and minutes
and seconds. The choice of describing the distances between stars and galaxies by lightyears has to do with the order of magnitude of the unit of measure. The terms lightday and lighthour and lightsecond are also used, but they are not the best choice for measuring the distance between galaxies.
How do you suppose that we wouldn't measure time in years? Do you assume that we would have no desire to determine the time necessary for our planet to go around the sun?
