Selective enforcement is unavoidable in most systems of rules. The mods can't be everywhere, instantly, 24/7. And where ever the line is set, there are going to be judgment calls.
Also, I think you have to look at the intent. Threads on which Bible to put on your eReader would seem a literal violation of the rule against threads on religious matters. But they are fine because of not being associated with flame wars.
The topic of book piracy is inherently a bit political. So -- and I don't really know this -- moderators are conceivably slower to shut down political back and forth there than in a thread on how to repair your Kindle.
I think it would be annoying if moderators instantly jumped on every impulsive one-off rule violation. But I'm glad the see them step in before it gets super ugly.
Now I'll have to do something ugly to show myself as other than a total suck-up
