Independent bookstores usually host these author events for free. They make money off the books they sell during the event. The courteous thing to do is to buy a hard copy of the book and have the author sign that, even if you already own the ebook.

If it's a convention or something where you paid for entry, then I dunno. On my Sony you can make drawings/use handwriting, so you could do that.
