I have never used it like that but if I use my ipad most of the day, reading or surfing the net, I need to charge it by the time the evening comes around. It takes a lot of juice to keep that screen going most of the day so perhaps you would need to have a plug handy for him to plug it in when not using it... and make sure he charges it while he sleeps.
