I have been a long-time subscriber to the New York Review of Books. One reason why I like the reviews is that the people who write them are often known experts in the field. For example, it is not unusual to have a review of a war history written by the historian Max Hastings.

What these reviewers bring to the table is the ability to compare the book under review with similar books. In addition, they tend to flesh out circumstances that surround the book's topic so that there is a broader and more in-depth understanding given of the subject.

I find the NYRB unbeatable for the reviews it does. Unfortunately, the number of reviews are limited.
